Indonesia Unveils New Red and White Passport Design, Set for 2025 Launch

“Enhanced Security and National Identity at the Forefront of Redesign”

In a symbolic gesture coinciding with Indonesia’s 79th Independence Day on Saturday, 17th of August 2024, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights has unveiled a striking new design for the Indonesian passport. A vibrant red and white will replace the familiar bluish-green hue colour scheme, directly referencing the Indonesian flag.

“This redesign isn’t merely cosmetic,” stated Minister of Law and Human Rights, Yasonna Laoly. “It represents a strengthened sense of national identity and personal belonging for every Indonesian citizen.”

Each page of the new passport will showcase a selection of 33 traditional Indonesian textile motifs, further embedding the nation’s rich cultural heritage into the document. However, aesthetics are only part of the story.

Features of The New Indonesian Passport That Take Centre Stage

The redesigned passport, exclusively for e-passports, boasts upgraded materials and a greater number of security features. Director General of Immigration, Silmy Karim, stressed the importance of robust travel documents that can withstand forgery attempts, including page replacement or removal, especially concerning the biodata page.

The new passport incorporates a heat-resistant, flexible cover to safeguard the embedded chip. The biodata page, crafted from multiple polycarbonate layers with a protective coating, ensures durability. The passport’s paper is also security-enhanced and chemically sensitive. Both visible and invisible inks, including fluorescent and infrared inks that react under ultraviolet light, are used, even extending to the three-coloured stitching thread.

The launch of this new design reflects Indonesia’s commitment to fortifying the integrity of its passport.

“The passport pages showcase motifs from traditional Indonesian fabrics, which transform under UV light,” Karim added. The combination of advanced security features, materials, and techniques aims to ensure the passport’s protection during international travel, simplifying authentication and serving as reliable evidence in legal proceedings.

While the new passports will be available starting August 17, 2025, due to the existing stock of the old design, Yasonna proposed a unique incentive: the first 100 individuals to receive the new passport will be exempt from issuance fees.

Karim clarified that the rollout is scheduled for next year to allow ample time for preparation, including printing, policy adjustments, distribution, and system updates.

Since its inception in 1945, Indonesian passports have undergone several cover colour transformations. From light grey (1945-1958) to blue (1959-1982), green (1983), dark green (1995), and the current bluish-green (2014-present), this latest change to red and white represents a bold step towards a more distinctive and secure national identity.
