Extending Your Visa in Bali: A 2024 Guide to Bali Visa Extensions for Travellers and KITAS Holders

A visa is required to visit Bali in 2024 as it serves as an official authorization for foreign nationals to enter and stay in Indonesia for a specified period. This requirement ensures that visitors adhere to immigration regulations and contribute positively to the local economy and society. Without a visa, individuals risk being denied entry, deported, or facing other legal consequences.

Travelers planning to stay in Bali beyond the initial validity period of their visa must understand which visa can be extended. Overstaying a visa can result in fines, deportation, and potential difficulties with future travel to Indonesia. By familiarising oneself with visa extension options, travellers can ensure they remain compliant with Indonesian immigration laws and avoid unnecessary complications during their stay.

Therefore, for those wishing to extend their stay on the Island of the Gods, navigating Indonesia’s visa extension process is essential.

What Bali visas are eligible for extension?

While you are still staying in Indonesia, you can extend a range of visas that Indonesia offers. Notably, the online system now streamlines the process for visas originally applied for online. It is possible to extend the following visas:

  • Visa on Arrival (VoA) for 30 days
  • Single Entry Visa (ex B211A – Type C)
  • Multiple Entry Visa (Type D)
  • KITAS/KITAP (Investor KITAS, Remote Worker KITAS, Working KITAS, etc.)

Before initiating the extension process, it’s imperative to understand the specific requirements and timelines for your visa type.

What are the general requirements to extend visa in Bali?

  • A passport valid for at least six months beyond the intended extension period.
  • A confirmed address in Indonesia.
  • Recent bank statements demonstrating sufficient funds.
  • For some visas, such as the VoA, an outbound ticket from Indonesia.

Visa on Arrival (VoA)

The Visa on Arrival (VoA), is granted upon arrival to eligible travellers, and this visa allows validity for 30 days. A single extension for an additional 30 days can be obtained directly at the immigration office in Bali (Jimbaran, Denpasar, or Singaraja) for an additional fee of IDR 500,000 or USD $32.

Citizens of specific countries can apply for a 60 day tourist visa directly online, which can be extended twice for an additional 60 days each time. However, the total stay cannot exceed 180 days.

Bali Tourist Visa Extension

Planning a longer trip? The Bali Tourist Visa gives you 60 days to explore the island. You can apply for this one either before you leave home at the Indonesian embassy or consulate, or once you’re in Bali at the Immigration Office. And if you’re still not ready to say goodbye, you can extend it further.

Single Entry Bali Business Visa Extension

Coming to Bali for business? The Single Entry Business Visa is valid for 60 days from when it’s issued and lets you enter Indonesia once for that period. Just like the Tourist Visa, you can apply at the official Indonesia immigration website or at the Immigration Office in Bali. Extensions are also possible.

Bali Social-Cultural Visa Extension

If you’re in Bali for studies, research, or cultural exchange, the Social-Cultural Visa is for you. It’s also a 60 day, single-entry visa that you can apply for in your home country or in Bali. And yes, you can extend it if you need more time.

KITAS Extension

KITAS (Kartu Izin Tinggal Terbatas) holders can renew their permits online. Specific document requirements vary depending on the KITAS type, ensuring applicants meet the necessary criteria.

General KITAS Renewal Requirements

  • Passport with at least six months validity remaining.
  • Recent photograph.
  • Indonesian address.
  • SKTT (Surat Keterangan Tempat Tinggal) or domicile letter)
  • Sponsor documents, including KTP (Kartu Tanda Penduduk) of the sponsor.

Specific Requirements

Additional requirements may apply depending on your KITAS type, such as proof of investment for Investor KITAS, BPJS (social security) contributions for Working KITAS holders, and NPWP (taxpayer identification number) with proof of annual income tax payments.

New KITAS and KITAS Cancellation

If you plan to leave Indonesia, change jobs, or switch sponsors, you must cancel your current KITAS through an EPO (Exit Permit Only) application at least seven days before its expiration. Once canceled, you have seven days to leave the country and can then apply for a new KITAS.

If your KITAS expires while you’re outside of Indonesia, you’ll need to apply for an ERP (Exit Re-entry Permit) before applying for a new KITAS.

Renewal vs. New KITAS Application

It’s crucial to distinguish between a KITAS renewal and a new KITAS application. A renewal is applicable when you retain the same sponsor and KITAS type. A new KITAS application is necessary if you change your sponsor or the type of KITAS.

Common Questions about Extending Your Indonesia Visas

Can I extend my visa multiple times?

The ability to extend your visa multiple times depends on the type of visa you hold. Visa on Arrival (VoA) can only be extended once, for an additional 30 days. Other visas, such as single entry business visas, social-cultural visas, and KITAS permits, might be eligible for multiple extensions, subject to specific regulations and your individual circumstances.

How long does it take to process a visa extension?

Processing times can vary depending on the type of visa and the workload at the Immigration Office. Generally, VoA extensions can take up to 7 business days, while other visa extensions might take longer. It’s advisable to apply well before your visa expires to avoid any complications.

What are the penalties for overstaying my visa?

Overstaying your visa in Indonesia can result in significant fines and potential deportation. The current fine is IDR 1,000,000 per day of overstay. It’s crucial to adhere to your visa’s validity period and apply for an extension well in advance if you wish to stay longer.

Can I change my visa type while in Indonesia?

In most cases, you cannot directly change your visa type while in Indonesia. You’ll typically need to leave the country and apply for a new visa from abroad. However, there might be exceptions depending on specific circumstances. It is always advisable to consult with an immigration expert or Lets Move Indonesia for personalized advice.
