Everything you need to know about travelling to Indonesia right now

Over the last few years the rules and regulations regarding travellers entering Indonesia have changed like the English weather. There have been total visa application bans & partial visa application bans, multiple changes of visa requirements, changes of quarantine times and a variety of seemingly never ending updates and changes.

It has become quite confusing understanding the current regulations and rules, so in this article we answer your most common questions about all the regulations for travellers entering Indonesia right now.

Can I enter Indonesia using a free visa on arrival?

Since the Covid outbreak, Indonesian Authorities immediately put an end to free visas to enter the country and from around March to October 2020 no one could enter the country unless they already had a valid visa.

Between October 2020 and now, the Single Entry Business/Tourist Visa has been the most popular option for most foreigners to enter Indonesia due to its cost, timeframe and requirements.

In 2022 Indonesia announced plans to introduce the Visa on Arrival (VOA) scheme and presently 43 nationalities can enter the country using this method. You can check out the nationalities of those who may enter Indonesia visa fee below:

What is the Visa On Arrival?

The visa on arrival allows foreigners to enter Indonesia, for 30 days with the possibility of a further extension of an additional 30 days.

What if my country isn’t on the list?

If your country is not on the list, you will still require a visa to enter Indonesia.

Can I enter using the Visa on Arrival at all international airports?

Presently, the airports open for Visa on Arrival are:

Soekarno Hatta (Jakarta), Ngurah Rai (Bali), Kualanamu (North Sumatera), Juanda (East Java), Hasanuddin (South Sulawesi), Sam Ratulangi (North Sulawesi) & Yogyakarta).

Is the Visa on Arrival free?

The visa on arrival is not free. You will have to pay US$35 upon entering Indonesia. If you would like to extend your visa when you arrive you can, but you will need to pay US$35 again and go to immigration offices 3 times to drop off your passport, again for a biometric session and again to collect your passport. What visa do I need to enter Indonesia?

If you are not one of the 43 nationalities from the list above, you will need to apply for a visa.

There are a variety of visas you can apply for depending on your circumstances ranging from Single Entry Visas, as well as temporary stay permits (KITAS) and permanent stay permits (KITAP).

Which visa do I need if I am coming for tourism purposes?

If you are one of the 43 nationalities above you can enter using the VOA. If you are not one of those nationalities, you will need to get a Single Entry Tourist Visa.

Can Tourist Visa holders enter all parts of Indonesia?

All visa types can now enter Indonesia through any international port of entry.

Indonesian Authorities originally caused a lot of confusion by advising tourist visas could only enter via some ports of entry & business visas could only enter other ports, such as Jakarta. Fortunately, it didn’t take them long to use their common sense and allow all visa and visa on arrival holders to enter any international port.

Do I need to be fully vaccinated to enter Indonesia?

Yes, unless you have a medical exemption.

Do children need to be vaccinated to enter Indonesia?

Children under 12 are not required to be vaccinated; however, must provide certification of medical ineligibility for Covid vaccines from a health institution.

What documentation should I bring with me when entering Indonesia?

Depending on your visa the requirements will vary, but for those coming with a new visa, you will need to bring a printed copy of your E-Visa, printed copy of your PCR results, printed copy of vaccination proof and printed hotel and flight itinerary.

What is the PeduliLindungi application and what is it used for?

This application is a mandatory application you will need to download for entry into Indonesia. Additionally, you need this application for domestic travel, entry to malls, entertainment venues, restaurants etc.

You will need to upload your vaccinations to the app, which can be done from the following link: https://vaksinln.dto.kemkes.go.id/sign/in

Previously, there was an application called eHAC which was used to record travel and Covid Tests/Information; however, this has now been integrated into the PeduliLindungi application.

Which airports are open to international travellers?

Presently, the following airports are open for International Travellers:

Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Jakarta, Java)

Juanda Airport (Surabaya, Java)

Ngurah Rai International Airport (Bali)

Hang Nadim (Riau Islands)

Raja Haji Fisabilillah (Riau Islands)

Sam Ratulangi Airport (Manado, Sulawesi)

Zainuddin Abdul Madjid (West Nusa Tenggara)

How long is the current quarantine period in Indonesia?
