A Comprehensive Guide to Securing a Visa to the UK

If you’re planning a remarkable journey to the United Kingdom, there’s a crucial aspect to consider before delving into itineraries: comprehending the proper procedures for entering the country. This includes the meticulous process of applying for a visa.

Think of it as your official permission slip, a gateway that allows you to legally reside in the UK. Without a visa, entry becomes an impossibility, so ensuring that you have your visa sorted is of utmost importance.

However, it is widely acknowledged that visa applications in many countries can be quite daunting. Recognising this challenge, we’ve meticulously crafted this user-friendly guide to easily navigate the application process.

Our goal is to provide you with a comprehensive understanding of the visa requirements for the UK, simplifying the process, and empowering you to embark on your adventure without any hassles. We’ll guide you through the types of visas available, the necessary documents, and the step-by-step process to ensure a smooth and successful application.

Do we need a Visa to UK?

Following the United Kingdom’s withdrawal from the European Union, foreign visitors wishing to visit the UK can no longer rely on their Schengen visas. Schengen visas are only valid for entry into countries that are members of the EU, and the UK has now severed its ties with the union.

However, despite being no longer eligible to visit England using Schengen visas, foreign tourists can still apply for a UK Visa, which will grant them entry into the United Kingdom. In addition to England, holders of a UK Visa can also travel to other European countries under the auspices of the British Crown, such as Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

The issuance of UK Visas is an alternative solution implemented by the UK government following its departure from the EU. The application process for a UK Visa differs slightly from that of a Schengen visa.

UK Visa Requirements for Indonesian Applicants

Securing a UK visa requires careful preparation of several documents. Incomplete or inaccurate applications are likely to be delayed or rejected. Therefore, it’s essential to meticulously review the following requirements before submitting your application.

Essential Documents

  1. Valid Passport. Your passport must be valid for at least eight months beyond your intended stay in the UK and have at least two blank-facing pages for the visa.
  2. Previous Passports. If you have renewed or replaced your passport, include any old passports to demonstrate your travel history.
  3. Passport Photos. Submit two recent colour passport photos (3.5 cm x 4.5 cm) with a plain white background.
  4. Translated Documents. Provide photocopies of your Indonesian ID card (KTP), birth certificate, and family card, all translated into English by a certified translator.

Employment Documents

If your visit is for business purposes, include a letter from your employer on official company letterhead. This letter should detail your position, and salary, and confirm your approved leave.

Include a statement of your monthly income and how long you have been employed.

Financial Evidence

  1. Submit bank statements from the last three months, demonstrating sufficient funds to cover your travel and living expenses in the UK.
  2. Bank Reference Letter. Obtain a reference letter from your bank, written in English, confirming your financial status.

Additional Considerations

You may be asked to provide further information about your leave from work, such as whether it is paid or unpaid. All documents should be printed on A4-sized paper and must not be laminated or stapled.

Visa UK Application Process

To apply for a UK visa, you will need to:

  1. Check if you need a visa. Not all nationalities require a visa to visit the UK. You can check the UK government’s website to see if you need a visa.
  2. Choose the right type of visa. There are different types of UK visas available, depending on your purpose of visit. You can choose the right type of visa on the UK government’s website.
  3. Gather your documents. You will need to gather a number of documents to support your visa application, including your passport, a completed visa application form, and proof of your financial means.
  4. Book an appointment. Once you have gathered your documents, you will need to book an appointment at a UK visa application centre. You can book an appointment online or by phone.
  5. Attend your appointment. On the day of your appointment, you will need to attend the UK visa application centre and submit your documents. You will also need to have your fingerprints and photograph taken.
  6. Wait for a decision. After you submit your documents, you will need to wait for a decision on your visa application. The UK government usually makes a decision within 15 working days.
  7. Collect your visa. If your visa application is successful, you will need to collect your visa from the UK visa application centre. You will need to bring your passport and a copy of your visa approval letter.

Things to consider when applying for a UK Visa

1. Completing the Online Application Form

After verifying your email address, log in to the official UK visa application website and complete the online form. The information required is primarily from your passport and previous travel history. You’ll also be asked about your financial situation, including income and funds available for your trip. If you have any medical history or conditions, be transparent about them.

The final section allows you to provide additional information to strengthen your application and demonstrate your genuine intention to visit the UK. Once all sections are complete, confirm your details and submit the application.

2. Digital Signature

You’ll need to provide a clear digital signature to confirm your application.

3. Booking an Appointment and Paying the Visa Fee

Once your online application is submitted, book an appointment at one of the three Visa Application Centres (VACs) in Indonesia: Jakarta, Bali, or Surabaya. Choose a date and time that suits your schedule. After selecting your preferred location and time, you’ll be prompted to pay the visa application fee.

4. Visa Fee Payment

The visa fee can be paid using Visa, Mastercard, or debit cards. The cost varies depending on the type of visa and its duration.  Please note that fees are subject to change, so always confirm the current amount before making your payment.

Upon successful payment, you’ll receive an email confirmation, which you must print and bring to your appointment at the VAC.

5. Visa Interview

During the interview, you’ll be asked questions about your travel plans, previous travel history, and other relevant details. Be prepared to explain your reasons for visiting the UK and provide any supporting documentation if requested.

After the interview, you’ll provide biometric information (fingerprints and photographs) and receive a receipt. This receipt is essential for collecting your visa if your application is approved.

6. Processing Time and Decision

The processing time for UK visa applications can vary, typically taking between 3 and 24 weeks. You’ll receive an email notification regarding the outcome of your application. If approved, you can collect your passport with the visa from the VAC by presenting your payment confirmation and receipt.

If your application is refused, the visa authorities will provide a clear explanation of the reasons for the decision. This ensures transparency in the process.
