On 6th March an official circular was released, advising that 23 nationalities would be able to fly direct to Bali using the Visa On Arrival (VOA).
After much speculation and rumours, Indonesian authorities finally released an official circular advising that Visa On Arrival (VOA) is applicable once again for “some” foreign nationals entering Indonesia. Please note that this visa only applies to a limited number of nationalities and is only applicable to flights entering Bali International Airport directly.
In total 23 nationalities/citizens of foreign countries may enter Indonesia using the Visa On Arrival, they are: Australia, America, Netherlands, Brunei, Philippines, United Kingdom, Italy, Japan, Germany, Cambodia, South Korea, Laos, Malaysia, France, Qatar, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand, Turkey, United Arab Emirates & Vietnam.
Additional points of interest
According to this circular, if you enter Indonesia using the Visa On Arrival you are unable to apply for any onshore visa. The Visa On Arrival (VOA) only allows people to travel for tourism purposes.
The Visa On Arrival can be extended by a further 30 days, you can use an agent to assist or you can do it at your local immigration office. No further extensions are possible.
A visa fee of US$35/500 IDR is payable upon arrival at the airport
You should book accommodation in advance and bring booking confirmation
All visitors must have a return/onward ticket booked prior to arrival
Travellers using Visa on Arrival cannot apply for onshore visas.
Your Questions Answered
What is the Visa On Arrival (VOA)?
The visa on arrival allows foreigners to enter Indonesia, for 30 days with the possibility of a further extension of an additional 30 days.
What if my country isn’t on the list?
If your country is not on the list, you will still require a visa to enter Indonesia.
Can I enter any other International Airports using the Visa On Arrival other than Bali?
No. For now, this is a trial period, foreigners of the above 23 nationalities may only enter via Bali International Airport.
How long will this new amendment last?
We do not know. There is a G20 summit being held in Bali, which is most likely the reason for this change in immigration practice. Please note, that this is a trial period, more countries may be added or the scheme could scrapped if not successful.
If I am from the 23 countries, should I still get a visa?
If you are planning to spend a long time in Indonesia or you have a purpose other than tourism, you should get an appropriate visa. Additionally, if you are entering another area of Indonesia (not Bali), you will still require a visa.
Are there international flights to Bali?
Direct flights to Bali are presently few and far between, with only a limited amount of flights entering daily. The most reliable airline being Singapore Airlines, although more flights are beginning to enter each week.
